Confused about Medicare Drug Program

I will be eligible for Medicare later on this year so I am trying to learn about it. I am confused about the Part D, the drug program. Since I take several meds now it is important for me to get a drug program to pay for them.

Do I need a separate drug supplement program to pay for drugs? Or can it be covered all under one policy, say something like AARP offers?

If you opt for a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy then you will need to get a separate Prescription Drug policy (Plan D) since Medigap policies can no longer be sold with prescription drug coverage (They once could be, but no longer).

However a Medicare Advantage plan (Plan C) policy often includes a drug policy. Not all do, but some do so you will just need to decide what works best for you. You will need to purchase a Plan D policy if your Medicare Advantage Plan doesn't include drug coverage.

The most important thing, in my opinion, if you are already on regular medication, is to check the formularies of the plans you are considering. The "formulary" is the list of drugs that the particular plan covers, plus the amount they cover for each drug. Drugs are usually listed in "tiers", such a s tier 1, tier 2, etc, with each Tier indicating the cost to you that you will pay for each drug.

The best thing I have found that might help you in choosing a prescription drug plan is Medicare's Plan finder located here.

Hope this helps!
