Does hospice eliminate need for supplemental

My 73 y/o wife was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in April and has been receiving in home hospice services since. She has been doing reasonably well but there is no cure. She has plan F high deductible and a Part D plan neither which has been used since April. Is there any reason to continue these plans?

I am sorry to hear about your wife. She should definitely keep the F-HD supplement plan. If she falls and breaks a bone, it will be covered under the regular Medicare benefit, not the hospice benefit.

The Part D plan decision is not as clear cut. I suggest you discuss this with the hospice provider. Most areas have a cheap Part D plan in the $8/month range that can be used as a placeholder. I wish you both the best.

Your Medigap policy will also help cover health care costs for problems that aren’t part of your terminal illness and related conditions.
