When I signed up for part D the medicare representative happen to mention that I might be able to get 'extra help'. I applied and since my income is low (only social security) I got the 'extra help' which means that they pay half of my part D premium, there is no donut hole and I can change part D companies anytime of the year I like (there may be other benefits as well that I dont know about).
Im not sure exactly how low your income has to be but why not just call them and find out, it helped me a lot and doesn't hurt to try. I think you can even apply online. I could not put in a link but just search for: medicare extra help:heart:
