Medicare is 45 years old now and this article is a short history of Medicare. Especially interesting to me is the prediction by Government forecasters that medical costs would slow after the Medicare program was enacted, when actually they increased dramatically.

I think health care costs are higher overall under Medicare not because of the individuals covered under the program but because of the Doctors and Hospitals that "work the system". Many clinics and practices are set up with Medicare in mind and unnecessary procedures and test are performed which raise overall costs. Some of these border on fraud, and some are outright fraud.
