Hi Everyone-

When are the medicare cards issued and mailed? I will be going on Medicare this June and am curious when I will get the actual card. Would be helpful if I had an idea so I can look for it. Need it complete the other insurance process.

thanks

Dan

Hi Dan and welcome!

The Medicare cards are issued and mailed shortly after you are approved. I think I filled out my application online and less than 30 days I had my Medicare card. It took 6 weeks for my wife, I think it depends on what their workload is.

If you're turning 65 in June then you are eligible to apply for Medicare now. I would go ahead and do it because you can't purchase a Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage, or Medicare Part D drug program until you get your Medicare number (listed on your Medicare card).

If you are applying for Medicare only and not Social Security, the link below will get you going:

I have been on SSI and medicaid due to leukemia for the past two years. Was informed I would have to file for Social Security benefits and Medicare even though I will only be 62 years old this year. Trying to get all my ducks in a row since this whole process is somewhat confusing.

I know I will have to sign up for part A and part B. Was told part D is also needed for a very expensive medication due to my leukemia as well as meds for other illnesses. I do have someone helping me through this process but would like to have an idea when they issue the Medicare cards so I can better prepare myself. Sept will be my 62nd B.D.

Hi Dan,

Sorry to hear about your illness, that must be tough.

The only personal experience I have is mine so I do not know the time limits or anything before turning 65, sorry. I do know it took about 30 days to get my card after I applied and about 6 weeks for my wife.

You are wise to start getting things lined up now. Most likely you can find the answer there:

http://www.medicare.gov

Or maybe someone in the industry or someone that has gone through the same thing can chime in and help more.

If Social Security has said that you will get Medicare early due to disability, then you should expect to receive your card 3 months before your 25th month of disability. In other words, about 3 months before your Medicare is scheduled to become effective. If you do not get it 3 months prior give SSA a call.
