Medicare is taking a look at penalizing hospitals that have a high hospital readmission rate. In other words those hospitals that have a high rate of readmitting the same patients within 90 days their discharge.
A study in 2009 showed that 20% of Medicare patients discharged were readmitted within 30 days.
This sounds to me like someone is not doing their job at the hospital. Either they are discharing patients before they are well, or they are not giving the patients proper instructions on followup care, medications, or something.
