Medicare Part B If I Have An Insurance From The Employer?

Turning 65 next year, question: when signing for Medicare Only will I get approved for Part B if I am employed and have an active insurance from my employer. TIA!

First, you need to ask your employer if Medicare will be "primary" or "secondary" when you turn 65. With large group plans, Medicare will be the secondary payer. In this case, most people enroll in Medicare Part A since it is free and delay enrollment in Part B until they lose the group plan at retirement. This is because the Part B premiums are usually more than the secondary payments made.

One execption is if the large group plan is an HSA eligible HDHP and you want to continue contributing to the HSA. In this case, you would also delay Part A enrollment because you cannot contribute to an HSA once you are on Part A.

With small group plans, Medicare becomes the primary payer and you enroll in both Parts A and B.

I am 65, still employed, and work for the State of Texas. I have Medicare part A. I plan on retiring next year. I have been working for the State for 25 years, and am vested with lifetime insurance after I retire. My question is this. Is Medicare A all that I need when I retire? Does my State insurance suffice?

You will need to enroll in Medicare Part B at retirement. The standard Part B premium will be $135.50/month in 2019 but those with a high income pay a surcharge called IRMAA.

The State retiree health benefit offers several options.

"When a retiree becomes eligible for Medicare and enrolls in Medicare Parts A and B, the next step is to call ERS and provide the information on their Medicare card. This will begin the enrollment process into HealthSelect Medicare Rx (Part D prescription drug plan), administered by UnitedHealthcare, and if they choose, HealthSelect℠ Medicare Advantage, administered by Humana.

Medicare-enrolled retirees can choose to stay in HealthSelect of Texas, but their coverage will change to HealthSelect Secondary."
