Everyone who has Medicare is eligible to purchase Prescription Drug Coverage (Medicare Part D). The plans are offered by private insurance companies that Medicare approves. It is important to join a plan when you first become eligible because you will pay more if you enroll later.
Currently there are two methods to obtain Part D:
1. Medicare Prescription Drug Plans. These are plans that add drug coverage to Original Medicare, some Medicare Cost Plans, some Medicare Private Fee-for-Service Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans.
2. Medicare Advantage Plans. Some (but not all) Medicare Advantage Plans also include prescription drug coverage.
