Medigap Insurance Rates Climbing

Two years ago I moved to an area where MA plans were not available according to the first insurance agent I met. With only medigap policies to chose from I selected Plan N at a cost of about $85/month. At the end of the first year the premium increased to $110. In the second year my insurance agent called me and told me there would be a large increase coming up and he wanted to transfer me to another insurance company.
Shortly thereafter I got the letter informing me of a $45 increase immediately and the usual end of year increase scheduled.
I called around and found that BCBS had a MA plan in my area available all the time. As I had AARP Advantage before moving to this area I would have been happy with the BCBS Sapphire plan. However, the insurance agent told me it was not available.
After I confronted the insurance agent he denied the facts and I ended up with my medigap policy being cancelled. Needless to say I am not happy with independent medical insurance representatives. I trusted this guy to tell me the truth and rely on his expertise. Instead I was lied to and steered to a medigap policy I did not need. I suggest that if you use one of these people that you verify the information they are providing to make sure you are buying what you need and not what they would like to sell you.

Donsabi,

Sorry to hear about your experience with this agent. The agent probably did not offer the MA plan(s) that were available so he tried to steer you to the medicare supplement. This is unfortunate, and happens more times than not. I do recommend people to use independent agents, but I also recommend as you are recommending to research on your own as well so you have an idea of what is out there. Medicare.gov is currently your best research tool at the time. I NEVER recommend joining a plan over the phone, unless you have done your research and are VERY comfortable with what you are doing. Again, sorry for your bad experience. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask, and I will be glad to assist you commission free! :)
