I am trying to figure out what a good rate is. I will be paying $156,

with the Part B and Part D my total cost will be $350/month.

ouch

Whether or not $156 is a good rate depends on the Medigap plan letter (G, N, etc.) and your location. If you are comfortable providing your zip code or county/state, I could research rates in your area and provide a better response. I assume you are turning 65.

Plan G and my zip code is 98823...washington state...

I just wish the rates were more comparable. United Healthcare for me would have been $199 in my area, and my friend has UH for $123 in Arizona

doesn't make sense *shrug*

I could not find a Plan G rate in WA better than $156. Medigap plans in WA are community-rated. This means all ages pay the same rate so they seem high for those ages 65-70 but seem low once you are 75+. It balances out in the end and can work to your advantage if you live longer than the average person.

Another advantage for WA is that you can change Plan G insurance companies anytime without medical underwriting. If your current carrier increases their rates, you can move to a lower cost carrier without answering health questions. Your friend in AZ would need to pass underwriting to change companies.
