Uncashed Check

I have a check, issued by Medicare Payment, Dept. of Health & Human Services, USA for a Medicare Part D Coverage Gap rebate. The check is dated January 27, 2011 and was never cashed.

Is there any way to recover these funds now? I have no idea of how to go about doing this, if it is possible. Thank you for any help you can be.

By the way, at that time I had United Healthcare Medicare Advantage.

I assume you have tried to cash it or deposit it at the bank and they won't accept it?

If so I would contact Medicare and ask them to issue you a new check.

I haven't tried to cash it because it states "Please cash within 365 days. It never occurred to me to simply try cashing it. Of course, I'm sure it will be rejected, at which point I will go ahead contacting Medicare. The problem then will be whom to contact at Medicare. Do you have any idea of what department? I can no longer find a Department of Health and Human Services. Don't worry about answering that now. I'll wait until I see what happens with the attempt to cash it.

Thank you.

I would just call the main medicare phone number and tell them your problem and let them direct you to the right place.

800-Medicare

I just got the check back in the mail. I'll call Medicare on Monday.

That's what I was hoping to avoid. Getting into a conversation with a recording.

But thanks for the advice and number.

I just called them. It wasn't as bad as I thought, except for the news at the end. It took a half hour to find out the check will not be reissued because it was for a Part D Coverage Gap.

Too bad I was busy recovering from a broken back when the check came in and misplaced it.

Kathleen,

I'm not sure why it matters that it was for a Part D Coverage gap. Sounds like someone just didn't want to help you. I've dealt with Medicare probably over a hundred times. If the check is significant enough it might be worth your time to call back and talk to someone else. You can also ask for a supervisor as well. When you call in, repeat "Representative, Representative, Representative 3x before saying anything else or entering any information. That should get you to a live person que without having to spend 15mins. entering information into the phone. Good luck!
