Why Medicare is so expensive

Medicare costs are projected to be $1 trillion per year by 2020. Why is it so expensive? It is a combination of things: More sophisticated health care and treatments, people living longer, thus requiring more treatment, doctors seeing patients more often because they make more money, just to name a few.

Clearly something must be done as the status quo won't be an option long as the system will be bankrupt. The Swiss overhauled their health care system a few years ago and it has worked well as explained in this article:

I think one reason health care costs so dang much is all the tests the doctors make you get. What happened to the day when a doctor could diagnose what is wrong with you? Now they want to send you for this test and that test, and I think it is more to cover their own ass than anything else.

I wonder does a doctor get money from the testing centers everytime they refer a patient? Not accusing, just wondering.:s

From what I read one thing is certain and that's Medicare will run out of money before long. Something will have to be done sooner or later. Just as I am reaching Medicare age too!
:(

You are absolutely right that the Medicare costs are projecting higher, but this is due to the certain benefits associated with the different policies. This situation can be made good by making people aware about the type of Medicare policy and one should always go for the type that will suit his/her needs.
