Seeking Guidance

Greetings, Everyone!

As I will be 65 next year, I am preparing myself to enroll in Medicare.

To make a long story short, I am trying to find a good consultant/brokerage that can guide me through this maze, to help me decide what to do.

I am located in Northern California (the South Bay, to be more precise). I am not set on face-to-face contact. Phone and email would be fine.

Is this an appropriate forum for asking for recommendations? If so, what would be the appropriate subforum?

Any guidance most appreciated.

There is also Dayton Sayer in Chico, CA. I do not know if he also offers Medicare Advantage plans. If not, I'm sure he can refer you to a broker who does offer Advantage plans.

My brother who was attempting to change his supplement plan from an Adventage to a Plan G plan was just turned down for a polocy with Blue Cross do to a pre existing condition. I have been I a supplement plan for a few years now and was never asked or nor was turned down for my pre existing condition. Has anyone else had this experience? I’m not sure how to advise him on how to go forward at this point.

There is no medical underwriting for an original Medicare supplement when a person initially enrolls in Part B. This is known as the Medigap Open Enrollment Period (OEP). Medicare enrollees who wish to purchase a Medigap after the one-time OEP are subject to underwriting in most states. The agent should have pre-screened the applicant to determine if they qualify for a supplement.

Depending on the pre-existing condition, he may be accepted with another insurance company. Each insurer has their own pre-existing condition rules. A good agent will be able to pre-screen your brother to see if he can qualify for a supplement with another company. If he qualifies for a supplement, he would be eligible to switch back to original Medicare between 1/1-3/31.

He will need to keep the Advantage plan if he cannot qualify for a supplement with another company. This is one of the disadvantages of an Advantage plan. There is no guarantee they will qualify for a supplement in most states if they want to leave an Advantage plan and return to original Medicare.

Thank you turns out the EInsurance representative didn’t complete the application properly causing the underwriter issue. They are correcting the issue and resubmitting.
