Healthy Eating Obsession

There is now a disorder called orthorexia, which is an obsession with only eating healthy food. This is a new one on me and at first glance I don't see a problem with it, but like anything else when you become obsessed with an idea you often neglect other things you should be paying attention too. You know things like work, bathing, and cleaning house.

This is a good article describing orthorexia:

For me this is researchers/doctors "gone crazy". I like to breath air and I would have to admit I am obsessive about it, does that make

My husband stopped eating process foods and sodas and dropped 20 lbs (with little exercise). He was 185 and dropped to 164. His motto for much of what he eats is "if your great grand parents would not recognize it as food, then don't eat it." They would have no idea what a honey bun would be, but they should would recognize an apple or orange.

Getting back on track, I can not imagine how the above "obsession" would be bad for you.

Have to agree with you Heather we should only eat only things that look like they did when they were growing.

I think that article was mostly concerned about people who would spend all their time obsessing about eating only healthy foods that they would let other things go, such as taking care of the kids and so forth. For example they mentioned that meal preparation might take all day because they were so obsessed with everything being correctly prepared. So I could see if someone spent this much time on preparing meals how they could it could be harmful to them if they neglected other important things such as bathing and interacting with their family.

I think it don't matters as long as you eat healthy most of time. a break from the routine every once in a while is okay, I must have my ice cream now and then. so I guess if by obsession you mean that someone thinks they can never eat anything that is not healthy then I can see how that could cause problems because of the availability of healthy choices. there are times when you have to compromise and eat something a little less healthy in order to get on with your day to day living. who wants to spend most of the day searching for and preparing 100% healthy food? just eat healthy 95% of the time and you will be okay.

Anything carried to the extreme can harm you, so some balance is required. I carefully examine the nutrition of almost everything I eat - but I still cut loose a few times a month and splurge. If the activity is affecting other aspects of your life, then it needs to be rethought.
