Lose weight with interval training

I am not sure what interval training is but I can tell you what works best for me. I used to run, slow steady speeds for 30 minutes to an hour. When I got older and my knees couldn't take it any more I took up mountain biking. Up and down hills, for an hour or an hour and a half. The mountain biking is more effective in keeping me in shape than the running ever was. I am not sure if it is the extra time spent biking or the fact that it is periods of very hard climbing up hills, then periods of coasting down hills. If these "invervals" are interval training, then I can vouch that it works!:D
