Medicaid vs Medicare

We primarily discuss Medicare here, but would be remiss if we didn't also mention Medicaid. Some people even get Medicare and Medicaid confused, however they are two completely different programs.

Medicare is the government's health insurance program for those 65 years and older, but Medicaid is a program to help people with limited income and resources pay their medical costs. Medicaid is a joint federal and state program.

Some benefits not usually covered by Medicare, for example rides to doctor appointments, are covered by Medicaid. In addition, if you qualify for Medicaid you also qualify to get extra help making payments for Medicare prescription drug coverage.

Rules for Medicaid eligibility are different for each state so one should contact their state Medicaid office to see if one qualifies and to apply.

I for one used to get Medicare and Medicaid confused before I got old enough for Medicare. A few years ago I was waiting to see my Doctor and there was a sign that said "we do not accept Medicaid" and I asked my doctor why he didn't treat older people. He seemed confused until I mentioned his sign in the waiting room, and he quickly explained the difference between Medicare and Medicaid. Needless to say I was embarassed by not knowing the difference.
