Should I sign up for Part B?

Hello, I am 64, received disability almost a year ago and am receiving forms for signing up for medicare. I have lived my life believing that insurance is betting against myself. (I do buy car insurance, because I have to) Now I'm wondering about paying for part B, It seems like it would be a mistake not to opt in, but again, It is betting against myself.

Glad this forum is here, thank you Mack

I'm procrastinating, and need to make a decision soon. I am open for advice.
Thanks Again

Ken,

Welcome to MyMedicareForum.com.

By all means sign up for Medicare Part B. Where else can you get this kind of coverage for just $99 per month? If you haven't been to the doctor or hospital lately you are in for a shock as to how much it costs.

I am moving this to the General Medicare discussions forum and naming the thread: Should I sign up for Part B?

Hello Ken, my name is Bobby. If I understand you correctly, you believe that buying insurance is betting against yourself. The bet should be that at some point in your life you will either drop dead or need some medical care. I would bet that if you need the later you would be extremely thankful you signed up for Part B.

Part B covers outpatient procedures such as doctor visits, surgery, therapy including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and injection therapy. Not only does the insurance pay 80% of these charges, but by being a member the allowable charges are greatly reduced. This means even the 20% which is your share is much less than it would be if you had no insurance.

Additionally, you will begin to accrue a penalty on your premium for not being in the program. The penalty is 10% per year which is assessed against your premium when you join. If you go ten years without it and then join it will double your premium. You will also have to wait until the general enrollment period to join. This could delay medical care you may need to survive. It would not be a good situation to be in.

You can even buy a Medigap policy that will pay most of what Medicare Part A & B doesn't pay.

You are eligible for the best medical insurance available. You earned it. You should take advantage of it.

That's my opinion.

Bobby

Hi Ken,
I think it better depends on your personal preferences, as with which part of insurance and medicare agreements you feel yourself in a better and secure position. Because, i think it is more dependent ion your personal and mental satisfaction, whether to go for it or not.
