Spousal Medicare?

I'm about 10 months shy of 65 but I don't have enough quarters to qualify for Medicare or Social Security (only have 28). My wife, who is 65+, has enough quarters (40) for, and is enrolled in, parts A and B. But she's 3 quarters short of Social Security - maybe an odd situation. Anyway, I'm finding conflicting/unclear information as to how I can qualify for Medicare on her account. Does the fact that she's eligible for (and enrolled in) Medicare qualify me (at age 65) as her spouse or does she have to be eligible for Social Security as well?

Hi,

From this page on Medicare.gov:

http://www.medicare.gov/MedicareEligibility/Home.asp?dest=NAV|Home|GeneralEnrollment#TabTop

Click the "who is eligible for Medicare" link and you will see:

"Generally, you are eligible for Medicare if you or your spouse worked for at least 10 years in Medicare-covered employment and you are 65 years or older and a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. If you aren’t yet 65, you might also qualify for coverage if you have a disability or with End-Stage Renal disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplant)."

So the way I read that is that if your spouse is eligible and you meet the other requirements then you will be eligible also.

You can click the "my eligibility" tab on that page and fill out the form and it will tell you about your eligibility.
