Switching back to Original Medicare from Advantage

Did you enroll in Medicare Advantage only to find that your doctors do not accept your plan? Well there as hope as you can switch back to Original Medicare from Medicare Advantage from Jan 1st through Feb 14th. Your original Medicare coverage will begin the first day of the following month in which you switched.

If you do go back to Original Medicare during this period (Jan 1st through Feb 145h) you will have until Feb 14th to join a Part D prescription drug program.

Things you CAN NOT do during this time period of Jan 1 through Feb 14th:

  • Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan.
  • Switch from one Medicare Prescription Drug Plan to another.
  • Join, switch, or drop a Medicare Medical Savings Account Plan.

This change in policy from the Open Enrollment Period to the Annual Disenrollment Period really did a dis-service to seniors. As you mentioned you are now no longer able to sign up on a different MA plan or PDP. They also reduced the time frame that you are able to make that decision. Shame on Congress!
