Yoga for those over 60

Has anyone had any experience with beginning to practice yoga over the age of 60? I've never tried it before but I've had many people suggest it for increased flexibility and to minimize joint pain in the long run. But since I would be a newbie at an older age, I'm wondering if it would do more harm than good. Advice?

I've actually heard that as long as you are going to an instructor that is fully aware of the...limitations...of our over-60 bodies then you should be fine. It's the instructors that aren't necessarily familiar with seniors that will generally try to get you to do too much too soon. Take it slow.

I have always had an active walking, stretching exercise regime and reaped those benefits. Yoga was just not something I ever tried until my 40 yr old daughter did it with me.

Wish I had know long ago that the benefits of core strength through yoga and the definite benefits of stretching really make a difference for those of us who are striving to maintain strength. I no longer feel pressed to join a sweat as you go gym and try to compete with 20-40 something year olds who feel the need to push for miles of effort.

So, yes, do find a yoga group or program that considers your age. Joints age, no matter what we do, but arthritis doesn't have to stop your ability to maintain core strength, better circulation, better balance and just plain good feelings about yourself. (not to mention the social aspects of yoga groups) Good Luck, Good Yoga :)
