How long does it take to get Medicare after signing up?

I think it is a matter of how big their workload is. They say 30 to 60 days to get approved once you submit the application. It can vary. Call them and they will talk to you about it.

Thanks! We called back and the guy said it probably would not be too long. We had to wait for them to send my husband a form to sign, since he was not present when I started the application - bad move. Five days after he returned the form, the site is now saying a decision has been made, so it looks like we are on the way, and hopefully he will have his Medicare number by July 1, which is his date of eligibility. I hope!

After you sign up for Medicare online at the Social Security site you will get a confirmation number. Print and save that page that contains your confirmation number as you will need it to check the status of your Medicare application.

You will also receive an email with a link to the Social Security site where you can check the status of your application. The email tells you to wait 5 days. What it does not tell you, and it is nowhere on the Social Security site, is that it takes 30 to 60 days to get approved for Medicare.

It is sort of misleading in that you think that after the 5 days you might know something about your application, but it takes far longer before you will be approved.

That is another reason that it is important to sign up for Medicare 3 months before your 65th birthday!

I signed up for Medicare in May under my husband's work history as I don't have enough earnings history. The website continues to say "no decision yet". I visited our local social security office and called the 800 number numerous times and they continue to say everything is OK, its approved, your app is in the payment center, you'll get a letter soon but don't know when. My COBRA terminates in July and I can't get an answer when I'll get a card and be on the medicare system. So I can't get medigap or part D without a medicare number and I'll be out of COBRA at month end. What if I need medical care before I get my medicare card? I can't get any answers from medicare.

My wife does not have enough quarters to receive medicare. It's my understanding that she will file under my social and her medicare # will be my social with a b at the end. However, we were told b y the Social security employee who took her application that her medicare # will be her social with a t at the end. Doesn't sound right to me but can't get clarification. In the meantime she enrolled via telephone interview with social security on 11/19 and still has not received her card. We called social security and they advise still in process and may take 3 months. I'm concerned that the hold up may be because the interviewer incorrect filed i.e,. the b vs t. Any thoughts?

You are right, in most cases a spouse who does not qualify herself for benefits will be eligible under the spouses benefits. Her Medicare number would be the spouses SS# with a B on the end. A T is given in conjunction with the beneficiaries own SS# and according to the Social Security website means: Uninsured - Entitled to HIB (Part A) under deemed or renal provisions; or Fully insured who have elected entitlement only to HIB. I believe HIB here means Hospital Insurance Benefits since that's what Part A basically covers. You will want to make sure that your spouse is not classified under the second provision "electing entitlement only to HIB.

It takes for ever !
I signed up in September for December birth date. I got card with medicare A only. So i called....get thru to these gods is nearly impossible i think they hang up phone and go home until quitting time..
i was sent a new form to send in that i did. It has been exactly 2 months. They got the form on October 28th but are still processing it. I do not think any business can survive this. there is local office only open 6 hrs. i wished i worked 6 hrs and paid in full.

My birthday is on the 17th of July so I thought I could not sign up until 90 days before the 17th but when I called Social Security they said that the active day of your Medicare is on the 1st of your birth month. So they advised me to sign up on April 1st. That gives me a full 90 days for the activation. Some people are having to wait 3 months and if they signed up 60 days or less they are not getting their medicare to activate until after they are 65. So what ever your day of birth in a month you can sign up 90 days from the 1st of that.

Once online status says a decision has been made, how long before your receive mail.?

Quoted from the CMS Website under mail I recieve about medicare.

Evidence of Coverage (EOC)

What is it?

If you're in a Medicare plan, your plan will send you an "Evidence of Coverage" (EOC) each year, usually in the fall. The EOC gives you details about what the plan covers, how much you pay, and more.

When should I get it?
September

Who sends it?
Your plan

What should I do if I get this notice?

Review any changes to decide whether the plan will continue to meet your needs in the next year. If you don't get this important document, contact your plan.
